Many of us will be familiar with the Insta-Chef Thomas Straker (a.k.a #allthingsbutter), who’s made a living (not without controversy) for himself by blending various ingredients with butter and satisfyingly sharing them with his 1.6 million followers. And since the anonymous @sluttycheff’s iconic exposé of the young chef hit the news earlier this month (which is worth a read if you haven’t yet) we’re thinking about the glistening, lactose-loaded spread now more than ever.


The season of transitional wardrobes is sneaking up on us, and with butter on our mind, we’re unsurprisingly looking to the world of food yet again for the sartorial solution. Understated, almost neutral, but with a hint of fun, it looks like butter yellow will ­­– quite literally – be the bread and butter of our transitional wardrobes this year.

The remedy for feeling spillage-cautious in plain white, boring in beige, and too vibrant in yellow, the buttery hue is the subtly playful outlier in the neutral colour roster. And it’s not just us who loves the spreadable shade this season, meaning there’s no shortage of inspiration both on the runway and the high street.

Known for status-lifting luxury basics, LA-based menswear label Fear of God practically wrote the handbook on butter-stick dressing with their Autumn/Winter 2023 collection, using it to make boxy suits and jackets look rich and creamy. Proving its versatility, the colour was also able to lend itself to the sporty trend of the moment in Mowalola’s collection. Enlisted as the base in a bodycon, jersey-like dress, and paired with deep accents and sporty features, butter yellow became a retro alternative to white.

Back on the other end of the spectrum, cult elevated womenswear brand, Tove’s silky evening wear turns velvety in the delectable hue, as if it’s melting off the wearer. Ghost used the shade to similar effect for its latest collection, wrapping around the body in signature bias-cut satin.


The one tip we’re taking away from this season’s runways is that texture is key to unlocking the full potential of buttery ensembles. Fluid and drapey silks are given a mouth-watering elegance, while leather and wool are given a surprising, ‘if you know, you know’ twist. Before beige, red and brown take over our cold-weather wardrobes, ease softly into autumn with this season's it-colour. We dairy you.
