It bags come and go. Moving with shifting sentiment (micro! Macro! Chunky! flat!) few handbags make enough of an impact to endure the test of time. There’s the Hermes Birkin, Fendi Baguette, Dior Lady, Vuitton Speedy and Chanel 2.55, all icons in their own right of course and recognizable from a mile away. The Gucci Jackie has joined this pantheon of greats and gets refined for 2023.

The story goes that former American First Lady Jackie Kennedy was first spotted shielding herself from the prying paparazzi on the streets of Manhattan with one of Gucci’s pretty purses in the 1970s. In the years following, the bag was seen so many times on Jackie O’s arm that Gucci eventually renamed the bag after her.

Making its debut in 1961, 40 years after Guccio Gucci opened his first luggage and saddlery shop in Florence, the Jackie bag’s short buckled strap, signature soft crescent shape and piston hardware has transcended six decades. From Tom Ford’s 1999 velvet iteration to Frida Giannini’s floral design carried by Kate Moss in a 2014 campaign; the Jackie has been reimagined time after time by the brand’s succession of creative directors each with a new take.

When relaunched by former creative director Alessandro Michele for Gucci’s Autumn/Winter 2020-2021 collection, the bag was declared “the season obsession”, with a 223% increase in Google searches recorded in July that year. Carried by everyone from Harry Styles to Cate Blanchett, the latest chapter of the Jackie features actress Dakota Johnson. Rendered in deep red, off-white, and black versions, Gucci’s Jackie 1961 relaunch has a softer silhouette and is made from sturdy grainy, natural leather - a true homage to the cult classic.
