It's the day after the first Monday in May and the dust has still yet to settle on the biggest fashion of the year. This year’s Met Gala paid tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, who (if you didn't already know) was a German fashion designer and legend, best known for transforming Chanel, where he became creative director in 1983, into a contemporary powerhouse – plus, he also designed for Chloé, Patou and Fendi, where he made a similar impact with his peerless taste.

Last night attendees walked the red carpet (or in this case a creamy beige carpet) “In honour of Karl.” Some were adorned with his signature Lagerfeld and Chanel motifs – the white camellia, pearls and tweed – while others arrived dressed as his beloved cat Choupette (although we didn't expect much less from Doja Cat or Jared Leto).

The biggest trend to emerge across the event, however, was a parade of black and white outfits. Less than 24 hours since the show came to a close, searches for Monochrome fashion have shot up by 163%, according to trend experts, after black and white looks plus statement combinations of both colours combined featured throughout the evening. From Michelle Yeoh’s Karl Lagerfeld black and white collared getup and Janelle Monáe’s larger-than-life Thom Browne overcoat; to Billie Eilish’s custom all-black lace dress by Simone Rocha to Rihanna’s solid white floral Valentino Haute Couture gown and cape, which, as expected, stole the show.

But aside from all the glamour… here’s some outfit inspo from the Because team for tips on how to add statement black-and-white into your own everyday wardrobe…

Michelle Yeoh

A winning look? Inspired by Michelle Yeoh, who took home the Best Actress award at the Oscars, opt for white shirting, layered over a black skirt. Up the elegant silver jewellery and throw on knee-high boots for a look that will have you stomping to success.

Janelle Monáe

When Janelle Monáe’s removed her larger-than-life Thom Browne overcoat to reveal this crinoline slip dress, red-carpet onlookers were blown away – and so were we! For an everyday take on mesh maximalist, layer your sequin-emblazoned bra over a white tee and pair it with some black tailored trousers and a showstopping metallic shoe.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish is a dab hand at channelling gothic romance but if your fearful of a lace overload, opt for a lace-trimmed slip, footless tights and mesh gloves. An all-black look best accompanied by a Simone Rocha pearly bag and dazzling drop earrings.

Rihanna

No one quite does the Met Gala like Rihanna and this year she did not disappoint wearing Valentino Couture. Get Rih Rih’s look – albeit a slightly toned-down version – with a 3D floral shirt and handbag, LOEWE shades and comfy wrap-around trainers.
