Traditional “menswear” separates and accessories have long crept their way into our wardrobes. From poplin shirts and waistcoats to oversized tailored trousers, borrowing from the boys is a tale as old as time – and one that feels increasingly outdated with the ample options that are out there for women. But today, the uptake of menswear staples has seen women opting for a classic tie to top off their day-to-evening looks.

We all noticed the AW23 tie trend over fashion month, right? Pierpaolo Piccioli hosted a “black tie event” for Valentino in Paris, which saw ballgowns and sequin minidresses all accented with the punk-appropriated accessory (suitably skinny, those Valentino ties were more rebel, less savile row!). While in London, the BFC played host to Ukraine Fashion Week and designer Ksenia Schnaider presented a series of upcycled looks, made from salvaged silk ties.

Dice Kayek’s architectural silhouettes, puff sleeves and XXL shirting were given a serious edge when paired with black tie iterations, and David Koma made a convincing bid in favour of the accessory alongside his signature sequined party dresses. Superbrands Hermès, Dior and McQueen have all also dabbled in the tie for AW23, pairing theirs with full-length skirts, crisp white shirts and nipped belted waists.

Harking back to Notting Hill-era Julia Roberts, some could argue that the tie is the ultimate signifier of androgynous chic. A corporate uniform and symbol of conformity to rebel against. Just think of the women who have famously donned one around their neck: Princess Diana, Marlene Dietrich, Patti Smith, Frida Khalo and Winona Ryder (to name a few matriarchs) – all favoured the tie from time to time.  It’s inspiring us here at Because to smarten up our return to the office post-Bank holiday weekend. From statement to classic, ties are trending and here’s our pick of the neckpieces anyone can pull off...
