What… Gucci Rouge à Lèvres Lunaison Lipstick

Why… A high-intensity iridescent red lipstick twinkling with glitter is the perfect way to give a classic look a contemporary revamp

Gucci have released a frankly delightful glittery red lipstick, the Rouge à Lèvres Lunaison. Developed under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele, the “range of brilliantly coloured shades are inspired by iconic Hollywood movies and characters form the gilded era”. It is an opportunity for sartorial decadence: to experiment, be bold, self-assured and have opulent lips that shimmer in the moonlight.

The strong pigment glides onto the lips without creating too much texture. The colour, 25 Goldie Red (THE Gucci red) has a vibrancy that does not err on orange, but recalls red berries. This is a red that is bright, not dark. The scent, similarly, is gently floral and fruity.

Wearing red lipstick can be a bit tricky. Yes, it can make a woman feel like a Hollywood starlet from another era, but it can also create the illusion that the wearer has slightly smaller lips, a little more severe than their plump actuality. However, the Rouge à Lèvres Lunaison Lipstick is rich, silky and created with a moisturising formula that doesn’t dry out the lips. Its subtle iridescence and sheen create a sumptuous, balanced, volumous lip without detracting from the vibrancy of the shade.

As Audrey Hepburn wisely exclaimed: "I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick." And imagine if that lipstick is glittery, bright red and encased in a golden tube stamped with a star – exactly the sort of over-the-top-ness to get behind. This is a lipstick which will stave off the winter blues and achieve the near impossible:  being both festive and sophisticated.
